M — 007 First Light Character Guide
Who she is
M is the head of MI6, the woman who signs off on every 00-licence in the British Secret Service. She is voiced and likeness-modelled by Priyanga Burford — a sharp, controlled performance that frames her less as Bond’s parent figure (the Judi Dench/Ralph Fiennes mode) and more as the executive who decides whether a brash recruit deserves the number at all.
Story role
M is the executive end of every major MI6 decision in the game. She greenlights Bond’s recruitment into the 00-program despite Iceland, signs off on the London nightclub field test, pushes him toward the Aleph operation in Mauritania, and personally co-ordinates the defence of MI6 headquarters in Chapter 10: For England.
The ending is hers. After the Aston Martin Valhalla chase, Damien Webb drowning in the sewers, and Greenway’s funeral, M offers Bond the 001 designation — top-of-the-order at the 00-section. Bond turns it down and requests 007 instead. M accepts, the classic Bond theme plays, and she warns him about a shadow organization MI6 cannot identify yet — the game’s clear SPECTRE tease.
Trivia
- This is the first time the modern Bond canon’s M has been written as part of a fully voiced video-game origin story.
- She is the character who delivers the final cinematic “name’s Bond. James Bond” beat that gives the platinum trophy its name.
- Her warning at the end about a “shadow organization MI6 cannot identify” is widely read as the SPECTRE tease that sets up the sequel.
Appears in
